Quarantine new reptiles - Part III - BOA ANTIBIOTICS

More support to the importance of quarantining a new reptile... Larry, my Surinam Red Tail, ended up having mites and a stomach parasite. The mites spread to another boa this time and after finding out about the stomach parasite, the medicine was given to all boas as a precaution. A mite would have to be swallowed live by another boa for the stomach parasite to spread, so the chances are small. I've sprayed with Nix again and I hope to be rid of the problem for good! CROSSED FINGERS, OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE!!

what antibiotic you administer?
mlionti (August 29, 2008 at 9:57 am)
its a antibiotic and antiparasitic prescribed by a Vet... called Ivermectin... Flagyl is supposd to be a good alternative as well
reptilemike11 (August 17, 2008 at 10:30 pm)
what was the parasite caused from???
mlionti (August 17, 2008 at 10:34 pm)
Larry is a wild-caught boa so he had it from before I assume. One thing about boas though, is that not all parasites are bad. Boas have a certain kind that lives inside em... kinda weird

How long should they be Quarantin for could that one boa desease de transmited to corn snakes
mlionti (August 7, 2008 at 8:58 am)
a couple months is best, but the most important thing is just to make sure that you are observing the snake a lot. like, is it soaking in water all the time as that could suggest mites. Are the stools firm or are they runny, as runny could be stomach parasites. There are some diseases which could be passed from a boa to a cornsnake, but the most obvious would be mites.
