So a UU churches today are pretty much religiously themed social clubs for people who are disillusioned with Biblical Christian doctrine... :/

More than a social club, for sure. Our church is a spiritual center, just like any other. But true that the doctrine is not all Biblical Christian, though there is some of that.

Where is the fate of the disciples written? (I'd love to read more about it.)

What historians wrote the accounts of the disciples deaths?

I am UU and hear a lot about the accounts of the disciple's martyrdom's. Where are the accounts written and when?

I apologize--I just deleted a couple comments by accident. One was positive, one negative to UUs. Please try to post again and I will be more careful :)

In reading up some on UU...I see links to be part of some social movements like the campaign to end the death penalty..which is right under links for planned parenthood who contributes to the death of millions of (potential) life.. if UU ideas are to be respectful of life (Human beings, animals, the Earth..). Why would the forming life in womb be any different. I have a huge problem with understanding this conflict. Please explain?

lindseytabb,
There are some pro-life UUs out there. However, you are right that it is common (UU or not) for people to be against the death penalty and for legalized abortion. Not enough space here to explain completely, but it does make sense. For instance, you can argue that making abortion illegal will just create more suffering and poor health conditions by driving it underground. There are better was of reducing abortion, like preventing unwanted pregnancies to begin with.

Okay. I can see that. I completely agree with your last point. Lets be logical- we care about life. We care about our beautiful earth. We care about human suffering. We want to nurture potential life of plants, animals.. why would the potential for human life EVER be any different?! This doesnt make sense. You are right, lets prevent the pregnancy to begin with! But if it does happen.. lets do ALL possible to preserve that life and see it given a chance to succeed. Even without that mother...

lindseytabb, this debate is older than I am, and I appreciate your willingness to engage in it civilly. We obviously won't settle it here. One aspect of the dispute is when exactly life begins. 2 cells? 20? Each person needs to decide that on their own. Then there is the life and health of the mother to consider. More lives may be at risk from unsafe abortions if they were illegal. We actually had a sermon once at our church from a pro-life perspective--not all UUs agree on this.

got it. it just makes my heart ill..and this is coming from someone who was faced with that decision when I was 18. With such a compassionate seeking community as UU's seem to be- I cant imagine the justification. I know it isnt overall but when the church has statements and links to be part of particular movements...it gives the impression that it is a widely accepted and passionate movement- to support abortion. Lets encourage.lets love and lets support all life. Present and potential-

UU has no creed and doesn't tell it's members you have to believe in something. Planned Parenthood is not an abortion clinic. While some UU's might support PP, not all do. There is no creed, and not set beliefs. We are free to choose our beliefs and think for ourselves.
