Tibetan Buddhism: The Great Masters of Samadhi
BackFrom: MESSAGE OF THE TIBETANS. by Arnaud Desjardins
This is some of the most impressive footage we have seen. Filmed in the mid-sixties in India, Sikkim and Bhutan by Arnaud Desjardins in consultation with Sonam Topgey Kazi, the senior interpreter to the Dalai Lama at that time. There are many of the older renowned masters shown here: H.H. the Dalai Lama, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa, H.H. Sakya Trizin, Dugpa Dukse Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, the yogis Abo Rinpoche and Lopon Sonam Zangpo, H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche and H.E. Shamar Rinpoche as young tulkus, as well as many other eminent masters! Each film is full of wonderful images of these lamas and monks performing rituals and meditations. There are unusual scenes of yogis performing preparatory meditation exercises.
"These portraits of the legendary Tibetan masters are not simply a unique historical record, not only a stunning and moving inspiration for now and for the future, but an extraordinary testimony, a treasure. I believe that it was not by chance that Arnaud Desjardins made his films."-- Sogyal Rinpoche

Great video. But some comments miss the point. Buddhist Yogis do not merely transcent ordinary ego. Rather, they achieve direct perception of the nature of being, and perceive that there is no "self" seperate from the totality of experience. this experience of "beyond duality nature" is what grants freedom from the bounds of illusion. -- Glenn Mullin

So, some cut their hair to show their renunciancion. And others let their hair grow to show that they dont care anymore about their appearance . Who of the two is right?
Many women and men in modern society shave their heads. That makes them even more attractive to the other sex. So, it is not in the hair. They are sexy with or without hair.
I have long hair . That does not have any negative influence on my meditation. In deep meditation I do not feel any hair.

of the crown chakra and an activation much easier in meditations.
The yogis dont need to show anything to outsiders... they do some rituals as a reminder for their own sake. It helps them remember what they are doing and why! It is their own mind and ego that needs this discipline, nothing to do with outsiders.
in some cases, yes u are right, long fingernails and hair becomes missused and shows the lack of the right understanding. some use it to "act" like yogis.

genuine cases where some yogis simply loose any kind of identification with the ego and all attachments and interest in the body, simply dissapears. its from those cases we hear of long nails and hair.

Why do these yogis need the hair as a reminder that they still have an Ego? Should they not better look into their mind?
And what is wrong with an Ego? We can use it , even if it is a fiction.
These dirty Yogis are not a great help to humanity and should not be respected.

:) lol... dirty yogis!
a reminder is usefull because we tend to "fall asleap" again, even after reaching some higher states of consciousness! but realy, this should be seen more like a tradition. it has no real practical value.
in the beginning all these small "rituals" of living in a certain way, helps the aspiring yogi.. after a while it looses its meaning, but usualy yogis dont see any reason to change those little habits of their way of life.

ego as long as it doesnt interfeer with the yogis aim. and since they are preocupied with attaining macrocosmic consciousness, and not meerly the individual consciousness, then the ego tends to get in the way! :)
perhaps u noticed in your own meditations that the mind is constantnly chattering away! that is part of the ego which is earth and society bound. it must be surpassed if any realisation of truth should ever happen.
cheers.

Should we not respect every living being, even our enemies? For it is a fundamental delusion that we exist as isolated selves. The ego is indeed useful for keeping this body/mind mechanism alive. However, the highly realised have a profound understanding of phenomena & paradoxically know that all is Self. When you help a lame dog over a fence you are helping yourself. When you kick a man when he is down you are kicking yourself. Go ahead and give him another kick if you feel you deserve it!
