That was amazing! Do you realize how difficult it would be to tap in those wooden sandals?

i think the whole movie was interesting and i appreciated the risks he took: the trans storyline, the musical aspects certain scenes, and then the final part showing zatoichi very differently than any other film.
dopes anyone know how it was received in Japan when it came out??

Kitano had a perfectly good reason for this scene. Samurai films traditionally end with the hero wandering into the sunset and the grateful towns people bidding him a farewell, usually with traditional Japanese song and dance.
But Kitano wanted his version of Zatoichi to be new, fresh and anything BUT traditional. That is why he chose to do a tap dance number. It works on so many levels because it's hugely unexpected, entertaining, memorable and original.

I came here from Fark and I think this is awesomely cool! This was inventive, extremely well done, and I can think of a few hollywood movies that would have been improved by an ending like this!

Fark: You're directing a Samurai movie and don't know how to end it. Do you: A) Have a cliche fight scene between the hero and villain? B) Have the hero walk off into the sunset? C) Have a righteous tap dance number starring the entire cast?

You are an idiot, he wanted to end it differently
thats why asian cinema > hollywood soo bad, because it original.
Before you start criticizing hes directing capabilities look at his other movies ... you look like a fool with this comment.
