Liquid Nitrogen Into A Swimming Pool

Back

At Penguicon 4 in 2006, Nifty Guest Howard Tayler of www.SchlockMercenary.com took this video of Penguicon co-founder Rob Landley throwing a bowl of liquid nitrogen in the swimming pool, and the resulting billow of fog.

take into consideration the could have had it in a crushed form in a small amount of water in the bowl to create the "cold smoke" effect then threw it in, *looks like water to me but could be a dry ice slushy so to speak*, The fog doesnt last as long but theres more because it was spread and in smaller chunks but the same amount

katelyn980: you're almost right!

Nitrogen evaporates at the ratio of 700 to 1. They had ca. 5L of liquid nitrogen, hence it would have produced 3500L of gas.

Sounds like much, but it isn't - it's only 3.5m3, and the volume of the air in the pool is probably 100 times more.

I did like the way the guy tossed in the CO2 because the ripple/flow effect on the surface of the pool was cool.

1) If it had been just nitrogen, yes, she would have been in trouble. But the amount of nitrogen would not be a problem, especially considering air flow would have mixed it in quite quickly. Probably didn't change the nitrogen/oxygen ratio very much.

2) Let's be clear on this, people: She jumped into WATER, not LIQUID NITROGEN! By the time she jumped in, any liquid nitrogen would have boiled off, and there wasn't enough to coll the pool more than a fraction of a degree, anyway.

Liquid nitrogen in a metal bowl without gloves? Not smart. Your hand could end up receiving the Darwin Award.

jeez liquid nitrogen as it evaporates it acts as a asphyxiant and acts as a rapid frostbite on contact with living tissue so that woman would be severly screwed if it was LN. however it was dry ice, this when placed in water accelerates the sublimation process creating a low sinking dense fog, this is what we see in this footage
