What is Dharma?

Unfortunately, western seekers consider Dharma a religion. Religion is a way of life. It teaches good things but as a religious person you may be brainwashed and therefore prone to become violent. It is better to be spiritual.

Dharma is not religion. It is not a teaching. It is not separate from the soul. It is your soul. In Sanskrit, its translation is duty -- duty towards others. It asks the question, "Are you fulfilling your duty in society?" When you fulfill your duty, your dharma in society, you are considered a good person. Djarma Raja is the person who fulfilled his duty. In Mahabartha, Rhudistar had all the bad qualities but unfortunately or fortunately he won over Pandavas. All his shortcomings were overlooked because he was the victor. He was the worst king but still he was called Dharma Raja (the best person on earth). He had an addiction to gambling which caused him to lose his wife and kingdom. But history twists the facts.

Fulfill your duty and you are Dharma Raja. Dharma is unrelated to religion or spirituality. If you really understand this concept Dharma is not separate from you. Dharma is like your blood, your pores. It is you. Everything that makes you what you are is Dharma. If you are following Dharma you cannot make a mistake. Dharma is a good thing for society, unlike religion. But superior to all is spirituality.

I don't like to think in terms of duty, cause it sounds like an obligation. I would like everyone to do things out of love for others and above all out of love for God. Dharma is the eternal religion, or in other words is our eternal relationship with the Lord, our taste relation with God. How do we know what is our real duty with anybody??

Everthing is, becuase Dharma is complete existance, complete being. The more silent we are able to come in our day to day lives the more liklyer we are to experience the dharma in the world around us. I recall the first time it happened to me ( out side 2 agonizing events) is when I hiked up this hill and there stood this tree. It was as though it was exsuding a prensence, demanding that it was its self. Soon after that I started experincing Dharma in everything, my own boots for one. Beauty!

I never heard of the Dharma being our civic duety. But it does make sense in a way when I think on it. This guy is spot on with the Dharma being our soul, and blood, and skin. I still think that he didn't describe that aspect well. The dharma is our inherent qualities sumed up into a totality of being. What he neglected to add is that not only are us human beings Dharma but that everthing is even what we concider none living matter. A lamp, coffee table and so on is posessing of Dharma.
