In my opinion this is one of the best songs ever written. Perfect!

This is the same JD Souther that played with Hillman and Furay. This cut appeared on his third solo album,"You're Only Lonely." The title track was also his biggest solo hit. JD's about the same age as most of the singer/songwriters that came out of Southern California in that period, like Jackson Browne, or Glenn Frey, for example. They're all about 60 years old. Why did you think he was too young?

Hi,tks for the info, for some reason I thought he may not still be performing,Ithought it might be his son! You live and learn!

Your welcome. If you're a fan, might I offer some advice? There are recent live clips on YouTube of JD doing some of his early songs.
Do yourself a favor--avoid them. They're almost painful to listen to. "Only the Lonely" is a very challenging vocal. I was stunned that JD even tried to sing it without (apparently) changing keys. I'd much rather listen to and remember the man when he sang like an angel. JD's hero, Roy Orbison is the only singer I know that never lost his amazing range as he aged.

Yes...I tried to listen to them, and was amazed he tried to reach those notes again. His songwriting is suburb, his voice, WAS amazing,..and I like to listen to his songs. You are correct about Roy Orbison being able to sing into his sixties. I've always been a fan of J.D. Souther, and wondered where he had gone.

Hadn't heard this rendition before, only Ronstadt. One of the great under-rated songs of all time. The lyrics are perfect.
