This is clearly meant to be funny. It's just a shame it's not. With all due respect, I think many Americans are far too fundamentalist in their approach to religion. It's clouding their judgement on issues which, with religion removed from the equation, are simple. Why not allow gay people to marry, if we forget about it being 'against God'?
