It's awesome how they had Optimistic in there. It's not that well known of a song, but it's a wicked arrangement.

I think this is fantastic. Plain and simple. I've never seen a college marching band do anything like it.

who invited the music critic? Have you ever done something this massive? Oh and don't put words in Radiohead's mouth either I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate that! One more thing no one gives a shit about your credentials or your opinion!

I don't have to be Gordon Ramsey to know one of his disgruntled former employees pissed in the soup, although I have taught a state champion band (not in AZ).
I didn't give my "credentials" to impress anyone. I was responding to an ASU person as well as to show that I'm _from_ UA.
One more thing, I'm glad to know you support the idea of free speech as long as it's something you want to hear. Next time I'll go with the crowd and write things like, "U guys roxxors" and "i nvr seen so gud a bnad".

Okay, impressive in pure volume. Fine. However, their terrible tone quality and intonation and apparent even on Youtube. SunDevil, the hype is about the idea that they are playing alternative stuff, rather than the quality of their performance. Even Radiohead would agree that just because their music is played, doesn't mean it is played well.
I'll be at Gammage for your concert tonight (12/4/08). Rock the House!
P.S. I received my Music Ed degree from UofA.

Music is art.
Interpretation of art is subjective.
Let the kids be inspired and awed by this, no matter your opinion.
PS - your maroon and gold is showing through
:D

"The kids" can be inspired and awed all they want. I commented specifically about specific comments. Also, in case you didn't read my entire post, I did not go to ASU. I went to UofA and was subjected to Jay Rees' pretentiousness and "genius" on a daily basis. More power to him regarding alternative tunes. When he produces a band with university quality tone, pitch, and marching, I'll be impressed. The art part of music is subjective, but tone quality, pitch, balance, and blend are much less so.

Yes! Exactly right herbs4mike. Unfortunately, most of the posters here think that good/great/best marching band = cool music that they like, rather than quality sound and marching. The blasting edgy tone, high-dominated/unbalanced sound, and inconsistent M&M is characteristic of Rees' bands.
On the other hand, I love the arrangements. And the power that the band brings as a whole, despite some glaring flaws, definitely impresses me. Before I sat down and took the whole thing apart, I loved it. So.. it made me happy. Isn't that important?
