After a little more searching, I have found it. It is from a film called O.Henrys Full House made in 1952 and features 5 short stories written by O. Henry. Apparently Fox own the rights.

Thank you for posting this. I saw this version when I was a child. I think it was originally an American film. Does anyone know when this version was made and what it's American tile was. I don't think it was called the Gift of the Magi, if so, there is no list for this version on IMDB. I assume this is from the 1940's. Any help appreciated.

She sells her hair and uses the money to buy her husband a watch chain for his pocket watch. He returns home and is shocked to find she has cut her hair , she presents him with the gift. Only to find out he had sold the watch earlier the same day to buy her ornate combs for her hair. A romantic tale involving sacrifice.
