Abraham DID make a sacrifice, because he was willing to offer up his son. The point of this story is that God wanted to test Abraham's fidelity. The sacrifice that God wanted from him was that of total reliance, whatever the personal cost.

There was no sacrifice, what loss did Abraham have. Again why does an all knowing god need to test Abraham. He knew exactly how Abraham would react.

God tests us because we have free will. It's not like God sees into the future. He isn't bound by time. Our act and His knowing is in an eternal present. See Thomas Aquinas for some basics on time and eternity. By intending to kill his son, Abraham already had mentally made the sacrifice. That's all God wanted of him - the DECISION to follow His will.

Genesis 22 if you are looking for context.
"God will provide himself the lamb." This is the point of that story. It's God's sacrifice that saves men. How can we save ourselves? We can only participate in our redemption. Abraham participated and understood. It wasn't for God's sake it was for Abraham and all of us to understand how we are saved. Jesus is the lamb of God.

That is brilliantly logical. According to the "storybook". If God created us then only He can redeem us. Is there an intellectual fallacy here? What I find even more delightful is that this foreshadows the coming of Christ, The Lamb of God that God has provided. Christ is God\Man\"The Lamb". It is really God who takes on the burden of our ill used free will. Now That's LOVE.

The lamb is a key figure in the old and new testament. The story of Abraham sets it up, "God will provide the lamb". Then we will see at passover that you have to eat the lamb to spare your household. Then Christ comes and says He is the lamb of God. Then in the book of Revelations Christ is on his throne in heaven in the form of a Lamb. Catholics go through this every day at mass.

it wasn't a test for Gods knowledge, he was showing abraham that God can be trusted, and showing abraham his own heart for a self-security in knowing God trusted him
Magusim (March 14, 2008 at 1:32 am)
Why would you lie to someone to show them you can be trusted. Sounds pretty messed up to me. This is mental abuse not trust building.

Abraham didn't know.
Magusim (September 7, 2008 at 1:13 am)
Abraham didn't know what? If he would sacrifice his son? What possible good can come of such knowledge that could not have come from something that isn't mental abuse? What type of being uses this methods and can be still considered a good being?
OR he didn't know if he know god trusted him? Is this the best method for building trust? Would you ever consider doing this to someone you loved?
