I like Gloria. I don't like this arrogant guy though. If I had to suffer through a whole therapy with him.. :(

are you a little girl? ARE you a little girl? ARE YOU a little girl?
No, but a therapist who acts like this would make me feel like one.

My gosh..a therapist that calls a patient 'phony'!!

Problem with this "brand" of psychotherapy, is that it allows therapists to play fast and loose with APA and NASW codes of ethics.
In reality, Codes of ethics trump the "brand" of psychotherapy, and not the other way around.

Smugness, rudeness, arrogance are clearly against APA and NASW codes of ethics. This being so, Geestalt psychotherapy by it's very nature and design, is corrupt, unethical and fraudulent, especially when taxpayer dollars in some instances are used to pay for it.

Just for your info, in Singapore, for example, anything we do as professionals have to go through the ethical committee, and the process is very strict. One reason is because I think in Asia, there is still a stigma for having a psychiatrist or therapist. In Western countries, it is very common.

Yes. Its sad that the American psychotherapy professions are filled with fraud and mis treatment. In the US, psychotherapists are allowed to practice any kind of psychotherapy they wish, and when complaints are filed against them by clients, they pretty much can get away with anything except having sex with clients. And even in those cases, many of them just get a letter of reprimand and a mere slap on the wrist with letter saying "don't do it again", instead of losing their licenses.

I see. Well, in Singapore, the moment a psychiatrist or psychotherapist breech the ethical code, he will end up in court and have his licence suspended or terminated. :)

That's because the court, the law, and the ethical committee, whatever they call it, are related to one another.

I wish it was like that in the US. In US all are separate ethics complaints are handled by therapists licensing board, most people on licensing board psychotherapists or social workers, many of them are colleagues to the psychotherapist under investigation. It is rare that they will discipline a fellow therapist. System in the US is very corrupt. One can also sue a psychotherapist in the courts, but that is also rare and difficult to do. system is rigged to protect therapists not clients.

As a footnote this so called doctor of psychotherapy smokes and waves his cigarette around in both his solo acting performance in front of camera and in front of client, speaks to the arrogance of a so called "healer". It's very rude and smug and self absorbing and arrogant behavior. It's clear that Perls is more interested in demonstrating his superiority complex to his clients, than in actually helping them with their problems.

The man is a very good dramatic actor. He missed his calling.

Frederick Perls is a Gestalt Therapist and his "dramatic acting" is a tool that is used to keep the client in the "here and now" and "I and Thou" setting. His arrogance and smugness is critical in showing the extremes of self that Gloria is facing.

With that being said, your comment is "phony" and is rather smug and arrogant in and of itself! I can understand your perspective: however, a little reading on the crux of Gestalt Therapy would would undoubtedly quell you qualms towards Perls.
