I guess I can't simply disregard all of this as bunk. I don't entirely disagree with you either, but.. well, it's like a line I heard on a TV show. It wasn't a documentary, it was a sort of sitcom, but in it a character was saying he was interested in astrology. Not that he "believed" in it, but that he thought it represented centuries of accumulated wisdom on personality types. Or the comparison to gestalt therapy. It would seem that these things COULD be used for good by an ethical person

other good points - the use of terms that by force of probability apply to the subject (eg: abandonment issues), plus ego stroking - basically making the client want to believe that what you say is true even more by complimenting them about something equally vague and meaningless.

Good argument. The psychic issues a load of vague babble and the client who believes it is real fits this with meaning that is relevant to their own life.

this is so true, a girl in my class belive in psychics, she belived that if you asked a person to think of a question then trow a dice at a table and then say the first thing that comes to your mind that would be the right answer to the question.
I did this with her and I tried to say the most absurde things I could come up with like: a million(was turned in to that I said that she and her boyfriend would be together for a million days or something, cause she asked how would it go between them)
