I'd be paranoid about the PVC piping cutting through the band or something. Occasionally you get jagged spots or something. Since there looks to be a lot of empty space, could you fill the tube with some sort of padding for the band to rest on (foam, carpet, etc.) to make sure it isn't damaged? How it is tied might make it vulnerable, like I suck at tying bands properly in avoiding twists or keeping it lined properly on a face, especially a curved ridge one like this pipe.

The point was probably more in the exercise then in equipment. Attaching the band to something rather then a stick could work as well.

Kicking higher requires stretching usually, yes. There are different forms of it though.
