On cats and dogs try raising your head all the way up when you go into cat, when you hump the floor so to speak. When you raise the middle of your back up, lower your head. Get a nice neck stretch in there as well.

Not necessarily so; beginners whose sinews and muscles are very tight should only stretch comfortably, i.e. with bent knees at first. Gradually, they can start straigthening out the knees, thereby increasing the pressure on the sinews and muscles.
