for those of u who dont believe , i aint really about the debate. just do one thing for me, have an open mind and put away your feelings and call on the name of JESUS, and see what happens.

However, the fact of the matter is that no one is actually directly connected to the material world around them. everything that we as individuals percieve around us could be an illusion because it must first pass through one of our senses and be processed in our mind. Our own mind is what creates the world around us despite what life "truly is." Everything is based simply on how we percieve it. This is why existentialism is seen a such an isolating and despairing philosophy.

Even your assertion that there is a material world is just another immaterial phenomena existing in your mind. Yet, your mind is a direct result of the material world and it's workings. I think it's important to consider what "you" are and what "I" means so one doesn't slip into solipsism.

"Even your assertion that there is a material world is just another immaterial phenomena existing in your mind"
- Yea this is what i'm trying to get at, and yes, there is deff. a material world. We as humans, are material beings but the point is to never look at the world as being exactly how you view it because the power of the mind all encompassing. Solipsism is, i agree, a philosophy which should not be taken as an extreme but it does introduce interesting ideas to think on.

If you are an Atheist then what do you think is going to happen after death? In general...
PersonalJesus348 (November 19, 2008 at 5:59 pm)
I think anyone who says is "atheist", and note I do it in quotes since it should be confused as organized for it is not, is admittance that we don't know and what has been said before is very unlikely happens or can happen. Referring to religious stories that seem no more than noble tall tales.

Part of me thinks just get buried six feet under, everyone cries. I just go into the oblivion.

Another part tells me that can't be true but that could be the monkey part of the brain.

Are the "choices" you make only an inevitable outcome? Are we deluded in thinking we really have a choice? There's no way of knowing. Does water have a choice of which way it will flow? It's direction is dictated by gravity and the volume it occupies just like the decisions we make are dictated by previous experience and our situation.
civilfailure111 (November 28, 2008 at 1:26 am)
exactly, but that means we still make an imact in life. many people say that we have no choice and therefore make no differnce in the world, but because our "choices" are based on past experiences and the decisions of others, we can learn that we are not completely seperate and isolated individuals as most existentialists believe. This actually supports the idea that we are all truly connected to eachother because we are all making an equal impact on our surroundings just by existing.

And the running water will erode the banks of the river... I'm more of a middle way buddhist than an existentialist. Existentialism is pretty much the nihilist perspective of buddhist realization and the polar opposite of the material realist aspect (the conventional notion of reality). Both are absolutely true at the same time. In a nutshell, Nothing matters yet everything has meaning.

"Nothing matters yet everything has meaning"
- i completely agree with that and it shows the true nature of duality (that everything has an opposite which make everything one with itself). However, i would disagree that existentialism is nihilist in the least. Although Buddhism is much more uplifting, it really all depends on how you view existentialist thought. The idea that you are the only one who can create your life is actually not a depressing notion at all, to me.
