Being aware of awareness happens on a temporary basis. Identification does not stabilize on awareness as attention focus on the story of my life (the personal self) being played out. Is this a normal process?

But shouldn't identification stabilize in the space of awareness and the concept of me (ego)drop entirely on a permanent basis?

Identification does stabilize in the space of awareness. This doesn't necessarily mean the ego will stop functioning. When you are realised you are not identified with anything that manifests since you are prior to it. Ego may or may not function, either way you are not touched by it.
