Merit what? I would certainly merit architects and poets they have actually contributed to society to culture in a global way. This man attempted to vindicate his own pessimism and morose attitude. Anyone who is born as genetically ugly and fat as him surely sured be thrown in the vault for good!

He contributed significantly by writing a history of England and by creating excellent theories concerning causation (at least in my opinion).

Unless you knew him personally I don't know how you can attribute to him a "pessimism and morose attitude" unless you're claiming that skepticism necessarily results in these.
