Crunches and situps work different areas of the abdominals. The important thing is to do what is most comfortable. A crunch is not a complete sit up..Crunches are short bursts while situps are completely up and down. Just remember to do what is most comfortable...Like he says, if situps hurt your back dont do them, do crunches..and vice versa.
