Paul Carey Jones "Come away, death!" (Piano: Jane Samuel)

Paul Carey Jones "Come away, death!"
Piano: Jane Samuel

Here is something very special and not-so-often-heard. I've been wanting to share this with as many people as possible for the longest, and I finally got the chance to do it.

I am an art-song lover, particularly the German repertoire such as Brahms, Schubert, Scumann and all the rest. Paul's recording of this song introduced me to British repertoire, and Finzi's song cycles above all. I have always been a sucker for baritone voice and Shakespeare as well.. So this perfect combination just swept me away. Although I listened to many other versions of "Come away, death" after I heard it from Paul, I was very dissapointed to find out that every single one of them failed to move me the way Paul's interpretation did. Russell Braun's version was the only other that I came as close as possible to liking.

Since the day I heard his recordings on download.com, Paul Carey Jones had become one of my most favorite contemporary artists. He is a Welsh baritone on his way to the top and it is a privilage to follow his carreer. He has an amazingly strong, booming baritone that makes you jump out of your seat. And, no, he is not one of those who are as stiff as Commendatore's statue either! Paul has a delightful sense of humor, convincingly real acting capability and very energetic and charming presence on stage. And there's nothing "cliché" about him: he has an impressive repertoire with wide selection of musical gems ranging between Purcell and Britten, baroque to contemporary and anything in between! For more official and detailed information about Paul, you can visit his website or myspace:

He also has his own channel on youtube, where you can see his videos of his other performances:

And I believe very soon, he will be releasing his new album. I recently got in touch with him to ask for his permission to use my fovorite recording of his on youtube. I thank you very much, Paul, for being such a gentleman about it. And you can count on me to spread the word about you whenever I can.

Text (by William Shakespeare)

Come away, come away, death,
And in sad cypress let me be laid;
Fly away, fly away, breath;
I am slain by a fair cruel maid.
My shroud of white, stuck all with yew,
O, prepare it!

My part of death, no one so true
Did share it.

Not a flower, not a flower sweet,
On my black coffin let there be strown;
Not a friend, not a friend greet
My poor corpse, where my bones shall be thrown:
A thousand thousand sighs to save,
Lay me, O, where
Sad true lover never find my grave,
To weep there!

Other artists who recorded This song cycle:

Janet Baker (yep! she did!), Russell Braun, Bryn Terfel, Roderick Williams, Stephen Varcoe, Jonathan Lemalu,

Thank you, such a good post! I'm very curious how you created it. Did you do this manually (oh boy, hah) or is there some program for it?
civileso (October 10, 2008 at 7:57 pm)
I use Windows Movie Maker and MS Paint. But they don't do anything by themselves unless you manipulate them yourself. So, yep, it is a lot of work to put these together (more so since I improved the overall quality in my more recent videos).

Thanks :)

I think he has a stunning rich sound, however, not always bang on with intonation. Several times under the note on this recording. Prefer bryn Terfel doing this song with Malcolm martineu on the piano.

lovely interpretation. I am singing this next month so good to hear it sung properly.
I am also doing Madeleine Dring setting which is equally gorgeous - though can't find any recordings to listen to at work .
