First, we imply a nonanimistic view, which it should be unnecessary to discuss any further. "(Varela, 1979, p. 7) I feel like you may risk breaking this first implication of autopoiesis as stated by Varela in some of your assertions.

There is some controversy here... The last paper Varela published before he died was concerning the notion of telos in living systems. Prior to this paper he had been unwilling to admit that organisms are purposeful.

He originally wanted to refer to organisms as machines because of the purposeless nature of such. But as 'machine' I believe he is saying we don't need to make reference to anything but the components and organization of the system in question to explain its autopoiesis.

Have you seen the documentary Century Of Self? All 4 parts are on google video if you're interested. Part 3 I think covers well what you said in the first minute of this video.
