One of the nicest abstract paintings I've seen...good work. I paint realistic landscapes, so when a friend asks me to do something abstract for them, I choke. Ha. Any suggestions on how I could venture into this genre? It's completely new to me. Thanks!

I just wana say that i totally understand what you are saying, and thats how i am (i hope :D) when i do paint or make an art work..but i just wonder sometimes what art realy is..is it being too abstract and too not logical about it is the "crappy art" or the ripoff in art industry people talk about?..im kinda young and im just asking u for your reaffirmation, of why this is indeed art..and tho i can feel ur art in ur painting powerfuly..but i cant help feeling its just cause u kno wat is it like

Serious art is about commitment to the process, developing a skill with composition, color, and the possibilities of your medium. It is also about developing your own "voice" or approach that makes the art indelibly yours. The ripoff is hastily thrown together with clever commentary used to boost its importance. The style of the art (abstract, non-objective, realistic, etc.) has nothing to do with the issue of value.

I try to paint every day and don't depend on mood. I paint in bad moods and good moods, and it doesn't matter if the results are awful one day. I can paint over it the next.

I use acrylic paint on canvas. I used to paint in oils years ago, but now acrylics work best for me because they dry fast. I paint in layers, letting the canvas dry inbetween.

Sorry, I haven't used oils in years, so I don't have any tips. Best way to learn is to experiment, I think, to find what works for you.

Lynne, do you find you can paint all the time - or does it depend on your mood? Do you like to paint when in different moods - or like me I can only paint in a very good mood - not sure why. Also what do you prefer to paint with - and any tips on painting with oil.

Thanks
